Wave Theory of Electrons and Atomic Energy Levels

Learning outcomes - after studying this topic, you should be able to:
  • calculate the energy of a photon from its wavelength, and its wavelength from its energy
  • relate absorption and emission of photons to changes in electron energy levels
  • calculate energy levels for one-electron atoms
  • calculate the momentum of particle from its wavelength and calculate the wavelength of a particle from its momentum

Electron Shell Pattern @6:35
Description: A pretty neat table shown at 6:35 to always get the order of the electron shells right. It helped me because I didn't have to worry about remembering that the D-orbitals are 1 minus and F-orbitals are 2 minus the period number. A really small thing to remember but our lecturer said that "Some people _will_ forget this!" and in that same worksheet in the lecture I indeed forgot that rule. The video is at a lot lower level than required for this course, but it's a kind of nice very basic summary of some concepts and I found myself filling in reasons for what he was saying with what we learned in class!
